In 1944, Jan Gosta Waldenström first described and identified two patients with macroglobulinemia with symptoms which he attributed to elevated serum viscosity. Jan Gosta Waldenstrom in 1944 described two patients with oro-nasal bleeding, lymphadenopathy, anemia and thrombocytopenia, elevated ESR, high serum viscosity, normal bone radiographs and bone marrow demonstrating predominantly lymphoid cells.1 These seminal observations provided the foundation for the widely recognized though uncommon clinical diagnosis of Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia (WM). Also called lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, it was lumped with multiple myeloma until 1944 when the Swedish physician Jan Gosta Waldenström described its uniqueness: increased viscosity (thickness) of blood as a result of high levels of a large protein, which is known as immunoglobulin M (IgM). Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare, slow-growing cancer that begins in the white blood cells. It is named “Waldenstrom” because it was discovered by Swedish doctor Jan Gosta Waldenstrom, MD, and “macroglobulinemia” because it creates excess amounts of an abnormal protein called macroglobulin or IgM. Waldenstrom, which is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, came to light in 1944 after the Swedish physician Jan Gosta Waldenström determined what distinguishes it from other blood cancers: large amounts of an abnormal protein, immunoglobulin M, that are created by the cancer cells.
